Oral Law Blog Homework-Sophie Waldman

Do not turn to idols or make molten gods for yourselves: I the LORD am your God.

I choose this commandment because I do not believe in obsessing over modern day idols-celebrities. Celebrities are treated like Gods, but, in reality,  they create unfit role models and drive people from focusing on their environment. This commandant demands that we  “Do not turn to idols”, which means that we should not look up to an image that is unhealthy or obtains bad values. While not all celebrities are poor role models, most are obsessed with looks, publicity, and wealth. While I do not believe in a supreme power, I believe the only person you should worship, or idolize, is yourself. We should not be conceded, however, the only person you can truly compare yourself to is yourself. Instead of working to be a different person, everyone should try to work to be the person they want to be. For example, in my daily life, I am not the best at following my interpretation, but I attempt to compare my actions to those I have done in the past. While I can easily ignore celebrities, I often compare myself to others with grades. Under this commandant, I should only compare my grades to what I can do, not what others can. I attempt to use this philosophy is subjects I struggle with such as the SAT or math.

Besides the beauty portrayed in this photo, I chose it because everyday the sunset is different. All sunsets are amazing because it marks the end of a day and starts a transition into a new day. Similar to people, under this commandment, it is nearly impossible to compare sunsets to one another because they are all different. Sunsets end days and, whether your day was amazing are horrific, sunsets provide a reminder that there are opportunities to improve, change, and reflect upon what you have done. According to Steve Furtick, “The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.”

  1. Wow, Sophie! This is a really deep and meaningful post. Thank you! You wrote a lot of truth with the way we sometimes idolize celebrities and focus on the unimportant things in life instead of what we should be focusing on. I appreciate how you looked introspectively at your own life. Also, that quote at the end is spot-on. Your blog also reminded me of some of the elements in one of my favorite kids' books: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=116Ja7xXbQ0
